GRAMMAR: LOVE, LIKE, DON'T MIND, DON'T LIKE, HATE

In unit 8 we studied the verbs love, like, don't mind, don't like and hate to express the activities we like and dislike:
      • I love going to the cinema
      • I don't mind (it's ok) doing housework
      • I hate getting up early
We studied that if you use another verb after the verbs  love, like, don't mind, don't like and hate, the second verb has to add the -ing. Look at the three examples above.

We studied some problems of spelling with the -ing form.

There are three rules

1. We normally add -ing                        going, visiting, watching, working
2. If the second verb ends in -e            writing, cycling, driving, using
we delete the e                                (write), (cycle), (drive), (use)
3. a) One syllable verbs in the
    combination of:
consonant + short vowel + consonant
We double the second consonant        getting, putting, running, stopping

    b) if the second verb has two
syllables and the stress is on
        second syllable with the
        combination:
consonant + short vowel + consonant
We double the consonant too               forgetting, beginning, admitting
